Buzzword Bingo
A vocabulary game that is open-ended and might just work in your context.
I used to use this game with my graduate students. They were all hard working teachers that we also studying fulltime to finish their graduate degrees. I wanted to keep them on their toes, listening intentively - so “Buzzword Bingo” it was.
What is Buzzword Bingo?
It’s a class long game. Students have a bingo card but instead of numbers there are phrases or words related to the lesson topic. Whenever the teacher (or could be students) say one of the words, they cross-off the phrase. The goal is to get bingo - a full line or Super Bingo, all the words crossed-off.
Here is an official description of the game.
Teachers can design the cards using the template in our Lesson Library. There are also other versions in the library.
It’s a great compliment for a lesson that is content based or has a specific grammatical or vocabulary focus. I used to use it to teach idioms. The card was full of idioms and when I said one in class, students would cross it off and the idiom was used in context, at a minimum.
It’s a simple but effective game for class that fosters listening skills in students. Enjoy a game of Buzzword Bingo!
