Cooking Up Lessons
Here are some ideas for lessons based on the topic of "cooking".
Cooking is a great topic for lessons and hey, you’ll also be teaching students a fundamental life skill!
I’ve used cooking and cooked up so many delicious lessons based on the kitchen and I’d like to share some possible ones with you.
Recipes. Using recipes, step by step instructions to cook something, is a great approach. Students after an initial recipe lesson can then share their own favorite recipes (in English of course!). See this full prior post about recipes for so many sweet lesson options.
Vocabulary. Cooking offers so many vocabulary lessons. Cooking verbs! And let’s not forget the methods of cooking (boiling, frying, baking etc ….)
Culture. Cooking is central to a culture. We call it “cuisine”. There are so many ways to design lessons about different ethnic foods. List the types of dishes for each culture and compare food preferences. Check out - What People Eat! One of my favorite video lessons is about “pesto” using this beautiful video! Also, check out the Great Big Story video lesson, Making Mochi.
Shopping. To cook you need groceries right? Shopping is a fun topic and you can design lessons using local flyers, discussing prices, making shopping lists and more … See all our offered resources tagged “shopping”.
Pizza. This one gets its own category. If you can swing it, even make your own pizza in class! Discuss steps to make a pizza. Debate toppings or which pizza franchise is the best. So many other pizza options! Even sing!
We’ve only scrapped the top of the “cooking” topic here. So many other fine lessons. Try Jamie Oliver, the genius cook! He’s been promoting healthy food in schools for years. Or how about discuss what students have for breakfast or lunch?
Enjoy cooking up some great lessons. We hope we’ve inspired you! And don’t forget to take a look at our tiny site “Teaching Recipes” for more lesson inspiration.
