Dream Crazier
Girls, young women need attention and empowerment in our classes - more content directed at their world.

In all my years teaching, one gapping “hole” seems to occur again and again in our curriculums - that which addresses the world of young women.
We teach language but we also teach people. And there is in my opinion a dearth of content, resources, teaching that addresses the world of the “female”. Every March 8th, we have International Women’s Day but then, we forget all about this topic and resign it to the bottom teaching drawer until next March.
We all need to Dream Crazier. For example, I watched the news tonight, a full hour. First time in a long time. I did a count of stories featuring men vs women. The imbalance was 9 to 1. The real world is much like our teaching world.
I subtitled and designed some lesson materials around the fantastically, inspirational Dream Crazier commercial. It also has a handy PPTx version for subscribers.
But there are a lot of other materials in our Lesson Library and video lessons on the topic. Here are some ideas to use this topic in class.
Of course, discussion for more advanced levels. See this set of discussion questions.
Stereotypes. Like in the video lesson materials, discuss common stereotypes of women and girls and how they develop.
Research and present about a famous woman. Students choose one and research, then present about her life, achievements. Get started.
Differences. List and brainstorm male/female differences and discuss if they really, truly are differences or Men are from Mars, Women, Venus.
Songs. So many songs out there to use. For discussion, listening, how about “It’s A Man’s World”?
I really like this Great Big Story video lesson about 3 girl teenagers who changed the world. Inspiring.
What’s your go to material, activity for addressing the biases in our society regarding girls and women?
