It's a fantastic, plain spoken form of poetry, perfect for English language learners.

A plug for our great YouTube video channel. Lots going on there, constantly. But I want to share and discuss our latest video for teachers and learners - Famous Haikus.
Haiku is a traditional form of Japanese poetry, characterized by its brevity and how it sparks enlightenment and a “ureka” moment. Typically composed of three lines with a 5-7-5 syllable structure, haiku often capture the morefleeting moments in nature or human experience.
It’s really valuable to challenge students to create, write and share their own haiku poems after showing them some examples.
Here is a template to use for those purposes. Also see our instructional powerpoint to use in class and explain what a haiku is and how it is composed.
You’ll be surprise with what your students will come up with. If they are stuck, give them a common theme to write haikus on.
Another approach, similar to a haiku is having students write 3 or 6 word poems. (similar to 6 word stories). You can dictate the type of words (adjective, superlative, phrase, verb, etc …). This structure will help students and also showing them a photo to write about can help as a prompt (see our random photo generator!).
Check out this post for more ideas about using poetry in the classroom. So many! Plus, see our sets of templates for all kinds of guided writing of different forms of poetry.
