We often write about using poetry in our lessons. Poetry isn’t as boring or daunting a topic for your lessons as it often appears. See this most recent post with many ideas.

Today, I’d like to introduce a new lesson material in our library. It uses the classic poem - I Wanna Be Yours to teach vocabulary and also get students writing their own version and rhyming lines. The Arctic Monkeys also did a cool song version of this famous poem. The video version is also on ELT Buzz Video Lessons.

The video and PPTx versions make the poem accessible. After reading/watching, get students to match the vocabulary with the words in the lyrics. Next, ask students to remix the poem and write their own “I wanna be your …” lines and rhymes and share with the class.

It’s a fun lesson approach. Extend by getting students to rhyme lines that you provide them. Who can come up with the best rhyme line for each prompt?

For example - She runs down by the river every day.

A student might write. She runs down by the river every day. She runs faster every month of May.
