I’ve been involved in building ed-tech for years. I’ve run the educational side of a large online publisher and created several companies. But along the way, I’ve also created a few nice tools that teachers can access freely. Here are a few of them for your use!
Discussion Generators. Just load one up and randomly get a prompt for students to speak or write. Put students in pairs or groups and let them respond. Many different types.
Story Dice. Put in a number. Generate the dice. Students use the dice to tell a story. Each dice icon represents a sentence in the story.
Short Level Test. This quick, 15 question test will give you an idea of student levels. At the end, students enter an email to send it to the teacher or to themselves (and can forward the result to you or print it off).
Picture Prompt Generator. Great pictures to generate questions and discussion. What’s the story behind the picture? 5Ws? What happened before? What will happen next?
Guess Who Is Speaking. A cool quiz. Students listen to samples from the Speech Accent Archive and must correctly identify the accent, the first language of the speaker. Can they? A great language awareness activity.
