A great overall teaching strategy is to have students “consume” content and then summarize the main points to show their understanding. Did they get the “gist” of the material that was communicating information?
There are many ways to do this and our lesson library has a number of resources and templates to help teachers. Here are just a few.
Get The Gist - A free for members template students fill it out - make sure to show a completed example so they can compare with their own as they take up and improve on summarizing.
What’s The Main Point? - After watching or reading, students list the main idea and the supporting points for it.
Report On It. - After watching a video or reading a story or book, students can write a report, providing their own ratings and responding, connecting to it. Here are some nice templates for post-watching activities for any video.
Summarizing is a great tool in any teacher’s Bloom’s toolkit! Hope you might find these ideas useful.
