Teaching English In English
Here is a handy book that you might use when teacher training or even with students
Dear Readers,
Just a short post about “teaching English in English”.
I once was part of a successful professional development program for the Korean government called, “TEE" Teaching English in English. The basics of the program entailed teachers attending classes and working to improve their ability to teach just using English. This book came out of that experience. It might be handy for some of you out there.
It’s not easy to use a foreign language AND teach! I once was an ESL teacher in Canada. One day, the principal wandered into my lonely portable, way at the back of the school (St. Jamestown, Toronto) and sat down on my desk. He folded his arms and said, “You speak French, don’t you?” The school couldn’t find a qualified French teacher so I got the job - teaching my own grade 4 students their French period, daily. I went to the head office, took the test and then was teaching my kids French. Long story short, it was MUCH more stressful than all my teaching every day. Even though I spoke a high level of French.
What’s essential is a really handy repetoire of go to language. This book helps teachers learn the essential language for an English language classroom. It is much different than the English you’d speak with friends over dinner!
Some of the book - you might use with students. Students can translate and practice the phrases, use the Quizlet study sets included. It also includes a full array of professional flashcard sets for teachers studying for Cambridge’s TKT - Teacher Knowledge Test. Click the logos on the book cover.
