The Price Is Right
Discussing the cost, the price of anything, is always a winning lesson for all levels.
Everyone loves to discuss and compare the costs of things - prices. So lessons focusing on “price” always work and can be filtered for a variety of ages and levels.
Here are some standard kinds of lessons focusing on the theme of “prices”, along with the many, many “price related” resources available to teachers in our Lesson Library.
Local Grocery Fliers. Bring in some of these to class or pull up the many available online. Students cut up the flyer of items and prices and then scatter them. Then, try to put them together and ask each other to guess about the prices for each item. Here is one that is printable you could use.
Now & Then. Get students to compare prices from a time in the past to present. Here, we have some set materials to help you. Can generate a good discussion about inflation. Prices: Now. 1998. 1973.
Guess The Prices. Make a list of items or bring them in to class. Students guess and see who gets closest - like The Price Is Right. Or even watch an episode of the show as part of a lesson! See our worksheets or also prepared pptx game. Other games available too. Plus, try this video game.
McDonald’s Prices. Most students are very familiar with the McDonald’s franchise so it is a good place for discussing/comparing prices and price knowledge. See our menu for quizzing and also materials related to McDonald’s.
What The World Eats (Pays). Compare how much families in different countries pay for groceries each week. See our video version. Or worksheet.
How much did that / those … cost? Get students to bring in items as show and tell or just quiz each other about their personal items and clothing. You’ll be surprised how well this works!
