Vocabulary Size
Here is a nice resource to quickly test students for how many words they know.
Vocabulary, let’s face it, it is important. Without words, you can’t say much, can you? A few grunts, all the body language / kinesics in the world will only get you so far. So teachers need to pay attention to vocabulary and especially size.
The size of your second language vocabulary will be a good indicator of overall ability, especially academic ability in that language.
One nice way to get a guage of student vocabulary size is with our 100 question presentation. It will take 20 minutes or so and you can also use it as a placement or level test. Take the student result out of 100 and multiply by 62.5 to get the approximate size of their vocabulary. See the instruction slide at the end of the presentation.
Also, time permitting, have students also do Paul Nation’s Online Vocabulary Size Test, in their own 1st language.
Subscribers - also see our full paper test version Vocabulary Test. A great placement test to use with classes.
Our Lesson Library has loads of other assessment tools and resources for teachers to use. Too many to mention - we’ll follow up on a future post!
