March 8th is International Women’s Day and the whole month of March is dedicated to celebrating the role women have played in advancing society.
Learn more about the campaign here. Also, see this previous post about gender and sport - interesting to think about …
We certainly applaud this topic, we need more recognition and promotion of women in society. As educators, we can use the topic in our lessons and our Lesson Library has some great resources to help.
Here are a few ideas for teaching about the role of women in society, during the month of March.
Research and present about a famous woman from history (or the present). Use our free, handy organizer and list of women to get high intermediate and advanced level students teaching each other about important women. Also, see our videos on the topic - this one, from our growing YouTube channel. (Pleeeeaaaaasssse subscribe!)
Stereotypes. There are many stereotypes that we still need to combat when it comes to the view and role of women in society. Why not, have a lesson where students learn and refute the many stereotypes about women? For example, play this older commercial. What are is the stereotype? Have things changed for the better?
Discussion. Get students discussing the issues surrounding women in society. Have students write up some questions to ask each other and then discuss. Or use our handy pre-made list of questions.
Men vs Women. What are the differences? Get students to list them and then debate - are they “real” differences or just stereotypes? See this organizer.
Perl is a great video to use in class - about women in business.
Sandstorm is a stellar, award winning short film about dating and hits hard about how women are often mistreated.
We have a full set of materials for subscribers, covering the topic. Find and download here.
It’s an important topic - we hope these ideas might have inspired some of you!

The example of successful and influential women in this video is good, but Iranian women who are fighting for freedom and against forced hijab should also be added to this video. Please complete the video. Now the whole world knows about the role of Iranian women.
