I strongly believe that the role of a teacher is not just to teach the content or subject - but also to inspire and motivate students. This can be motivation to keep studying, keep learning or it also can be just life motivation - uplifting students and providing them with emotional and inter-personal skills for living well and being great citizens.
So this is my Christmas message - instill in students a resilient mindset, a mindset of YET. Angela Duckworth has done a lot of work in this area - about growth mindsets. Her work is worth taking a look at.
Here is a free lesson material you can use right away with students. A positive message for all. Get students to make statements about things they want to do but can’t YET. Instead of “I don’t speak English well.” - try “I don’t speak English well, YET.
Students need a safe learning environment. It’s part of the teacher’s job description to provide that and make sure students know that mistakes aren’t a person but an event.
I hope everyone has a great Christmas holiday, however you spend it, whatever your faith or place in the world. We are all special - especially us teachers!!!!
