The theme of Christmas is something most teachers need to add to their lessons. But it can be a sensitive and touchy subject for the classroom. How to approach it?
One way is to do very “open” style lessons that bring in the spirit of Christmas but don’t kill it with a very specific focus. Here are 5 of my favorite lesson ideas in this vein.
[See all our Christmas lesson materials, especially our top 50 Lesson Ideas. Also, several new editions - Xmas Vocabulary. Xmas Jeopardy. Xmas Games. Plus, see all our recommended Christmas-themed video lessons.]
Christmas Music. No matter what you are teaching you can easily bring in the spirit of Christmas with some background music. Try using this playlist. Music works great to focus and calm students as they study and do their regular class work.
Write Christmas-themed “Thank You” or “Best Wishes” cards. Simply fold A4 paper and get students to design their own cards with messages/wishes for others inside. See these pre-made templates.
Gift Giving. Giving gifts is a staple at Christmas so why not in class? Of course, not real gifts but use these cards. Students decide (write the name) of the student that will get each gift. Cut up and walk around the class giving the gifts and saying why - “I got you this … because ….”
Singing Songs. Songs are great and there are all types of the holiday season. Sing some songs together. It will be great “group” fun. See our full selection. I recommend the 12 Days Of Xmas. Pass The Paper - finish the tune always works.
Throw a party. Food. If possible, why not just have an open lesson, mingle, speak English, everyone brings in some special food they love. Feel the communion of being together on Christmas.
Enjoy teaching over the holidays and I hope you get a well-deserved break!
