Killing Time
It's a personal topic that usually hits the student interest mark in the classroom.
Teachers are always looking for high-interest topics for their lessons. One I’ve had success with is asking students how they “kill time”. [It also is a high frequency idiom students need to know.].
It will interest students for teachers to share ways they waste time, fill time. But students will also be interested in what classmates do in their free, spare time. The topic hits a lot of bases.
I usually start a lesson about killing time by putting on the board an image of clock that is hit in two and the phrase “killing time”. I elicit some responses from students and write collocations related to the phrase (waste time, fill time, spend spare/free time).
Next, I play a game of “Stand up if …” I read statements like “Stand up if you kill time by reading.” Usually just a few students stand up these days! We continue and depending on the class, students ask / make their own statements and students “stand up if”.
Then, students discuss what they do and ask and answer questions using this checklist. I usually have students say one thing about their partner to sum up and end this lesson on “killing time”.
It’s a great theme, you’ll learn lots about your students and they’ll get to know each other. Perfect for the beginning of the year or a course.
