Could we stop being so negative about AI? This is the second ELT Buzz article I've read that predicts apocalyptic doom for all things AI-related. Just stop. It's a tool. Use it critically. Be aware of its drawbacks. But it's also a huge timesaver for teachers. But God forbid we save time on anything, I guess.
Well I believe it is warranted - all teachers need to critically evaluate technologies in use. There is an incorrect belief in ed tech as "neutral" and just a tool. It's not neutral and "the medium IS the message/massage" as McLuhan well showed. Plus and most importantly, this is the first tool that replaces human cognitive work with its own - thus, by-passing much of what is necessary for learning. I agree AI can be used by teachers to save time with many tasks, but not as something mediating pedagogy/learning.
