So true, so many textbooks don’t consider that as either they want the school to have to but every year, or they just don’t think about its relevance to the learner, or maybe both.

We do need to keep our compasses on student central. It gets forgotten as you mentioned, I think Nunan in his Learner Centered Curriculum made the same point. He's fallen out of fashion but that early book of his still resonates.
