Even now, this late in the day, a blank sheet of paper holds the greatest excitement there is for me — more promising than a silver cloud, and prettier than a red wagon.

When materials developers or teachers begin the process of designing a material — there are some essential questions that have to be acknowledged or answered.

Here’s a list of these questions — also good to ask when evaluating materials that currently exist.

1. Do I have to re-invent the wheel?
2. Is the material necessary? (The Backwards Design process)
3. Is it doable?
4. Form. Is the material itself suitable?
5. Do I, the teacher, have to make it?
6. Does the material have a front door?
7. Does the material have an exit?
8. Is the material personal, friendly?
9. Is the material identifiable?
10. Is the material logical?
11. Does the material have soul?
12. Is the material reproducible?
