The Chinese Zodiac

It's the year of the snake. Use the Chinese Zodiac to teach adjectives of personality.

It’s the year of the snake in the Chinese Zodiac and it’s a powerful, interesting way for teachers to teach and get students using adjectives of personality. (the signs of the horoscope are too!).

We’ve recently updated our resources on the topic of the Chinese zodiac in the Lesson Library. Take a look. It’s an easy topic for a super lesson or two.

Here are few possible activities you might do on the topic.

  1. Show and read together our presentation about the Chinese Zodiac. We have several available. Students learn about the animals, the qualities of people and discuss together.

  2. Research. Get students independently or together naming the animals, listing the years and qualities. See our worksheet for this simple exercise.

  3. Find Someone Who. Fold a piece of paper into 12 squares. In each write the names of animals, years and qualites (can do this while using the presentation above). After, students go around, asking when each other were born and then putting their name on the correct square for the calendar. (works best for multi-age classes). After, review who is each animal and decide whether the zodiac accurately describes the student’s personality.

There are so many other review this. I often get students to write down animals and characteristics onto a word find and then make one which they trade with another students and race to finish. It’s a fun way to wrap up the lesson (but it does take time for students to make). Here’s are some nice blank templates!
